New cutting techniques have been developed in partnership with Sandvik Coromant and Mastercam – CNC Software which allows turning to be more effective and productive cutting in all directions. Since 2012, the tooling engineers at Sandvik Coromant have been designing a new type of turning tool, one they’ve dubbed CoroTurn Prime, so that a toolpath can utilize cutting both towards AND away from the chuck. This type of cutting has previously been limited by the tooling and toolpath operations, but the newest releases show drastic time improvements for “to and from” and “up and down” cutting. Essentially, you can now “cut in reverse” of the chuck and “up” from the X Axis you previously cut “down” to. Imagine being able to rapid rough twice as much material with these new CoroTurn Prime tools! One study, as reported by Modern Machine Shop, saw as much as an 80% efficiency increase!
This new turning technique is perfect for some applications where the different cutting directions can benefit the overall deliverable. If you have questions whether or not your implementation may benefit, please reach out and we can discuss your specific case!
